Farm Town Vs Farmville - A Side by Side Comparison

There are 117 groups on Facebook dedicated to FarmVille, and another 106 groups dedicated to Farm Town. In these groups you can find groups of players that hate FarmVille, and a group of players that hate people who hate FarmVille (titled "Anti-FarmVille Groups Suck"). And of course there are groups dedicated to bashing both games and the people who play them.

As an objective player (I think) of both games, I am setting out to solve the age old question (tongue in cheek): Which is better? Farm Town or FarmVille?

Land Expansions:

Farm Town: When you reach Level 15 you can expand your farm using coins; at Level 25 you can expand to a 24 X 24 Farm. After that you can no longer expand, and there are no immediate plans to add more expansions.

FarmVille: Your level and number of neighbors dictate when you can expand, and expansions are few and far between. They also cost more. The 24 X 24 expansion is still locked for all players.

Decorations, Buildings, and Landscaping:

Farm Town: There are a lot of options for decorating your farm. You can create 3-D effects and elevation by using the decorations available. Simply, there is a lot more than you do with your farm on Farm Town. However, will all of those options, it is easy to run out of land very quickly.

FarmVille: There are options for decorating your farm, but many of them are purchased with FarmVille Cash (purchased with your very real money). In addition, what you see is what you get. You can't use your creativity to create illusions of elevation, lakes, pools, etc.

Harvesting, Plowing, & Seeding:

Farm Town: You can hire other farmers to do your plowing and harvesting, thus saving a lot of time. Hiring others is also what makes the game very social and interactive. However, when you hire someone to plow for you, you give them a portion of any experience points earned. On the positive side, when you hire someone to harvest for you, you get 25% more profit.

FarmVille: You can't hire others to harvest, plow, or seed for you.

Ribbons and Trophies:

Farm Town: When you achieve trophies you don't earn coin, experience points, or gifts.

FarmVille: When you earn a ribbon you get experience points, coins, and sometimes gifts.

Animals:

Farm Town: You can't harvest your animals for profit. Animals can be purchased with coin, or gifted.

FarmVille: You can harvest your animals for coin. Animals can be gifted, bought with coin, and 5 of the animals are only available for purchase with FarmVille Cash.

Movement of animals:

Farm Town: Animals roam your farm freely, unless you freeze them.

FarmVille: Animals have a small range of motion, unless you set them to stay.

Trees:

Farm Town: Trees are harvested for coin. There are 30 trees available. You can purchase 15 varieties using coin; the rest must be gifted to you by your neighbors.

FarmVille: Trees are harvested for coin. There are 19 trees available. 2 varieties must be purchased with FarmVille Cash, some must be gifted, and other purchased with coin.

Seeds:

Farm Town has 26 available seeds, but they are restricted for purchase per your level.

FarmVille has 43 seed varieties, but are also restricted for purchase per your level. One of the available seeds is only available through purchase with FarmVille Cash.

Social Interaction:

Farm Town: There is a lot of social interaction with 4 different areas to meet and chat (Marketplace, Real Estate Office, and The Inn). You also interact with others when you hire them to farm for you, or you farm their lands. If a neighbor or buddy is on their farm, there is a green circle by their name, and you can pop over for a chat.

FarmVille: There are no common areas, or places to meet and chat with other players. Messages are exchanged by posting a sign at your neighbors' farms.

Ease of earning experience points, coins, and leveling up:

Farm Town: You can increase your coins and experience points by working for other farmers, so if you work hard, you can move up very quickly. You also earn coin by visiting your neighbors, and by watering their plants.

FarmVille: The lions-share of experience points and coin are earned by working on your own farm. You can earn a small amount of coin and experience points by helping your neighbors

Convenience Vehicles:

Farm Town: You can purchase convenience vehicles for plowing, seeding, and harvesting. Fuel is gifted to you by neighbors.

FarmVille: You can purchase convenience vehicles for plowing, seeding, and harvesting. However, in order to get the fuel for those vehicles you have to buy FarmVille Cash. A small amount of fuel accumulates over time, but it doesn't get you very far.

FarmVille: There are still quite a few glitches that will cause you to freeze, and as a result lose your work. There is no "save" option, so you can't do anything else until your avatar catches up with the farming.

Graphics:

I've been playing FarmVille since Zynga introduced it to us in summer '09 and I don't think I've ever stopped playing it. It has been a rocky road though, I've felt like giving up a few times but I've stuck in there. I remember a few months back thinking I was starting to get bored, something I've felt a couple of times before, but after a while I picked up the game again and got my enthusiasm back.

I thought to myself its not just the game I'd miss if I stopped playing, but the social aspect, talking to friends regular that I normally wouldn't talk to. There are countless times when I've shared my FarmVille plans with other FarmVille fans and I also get great ideas from them. I can't ever see myself saying goodbye to FarmVille, at least not in the near future anyway.

Do you feel you're getting the boredom blues? It doesn't have be hard to master FarmVille. Here are some ideas to keep you enthralled in the game and help you master FarmVille:

Set some time aside when you know you can play FarmVille and run your farm around that. Don't go over the allocated time you've set as you'll find yourself getting bored and want to end the game.

FarmVille can be repetitive so do little chores such as plowing and seeding, then take a short break to chat to your friends online, make a coffee or catch up on e-mails.

You can get, plant and harvest many crops in FarmVille. However, not every crop is the same. To get the best bang for your buck, you need to know which crops are the best and how to get them. To determine which crops are the best, you have to keep the following parameters:

The seed cost of the FarmVille crop (e.g. 85 coins for grapes vs 220 coins for asparagus)
The selling price (e.g. 381 coins for peas vs 173 coins for tomatoes)
The time it takes for the crop to be ready (from seeding time to harvest time, e.g. 1 hour for grapes, vs 16 hours for asparagus)
The XP per crop (e.g. 1 XP for tomatoes and sugar canes, 2 XP for asparagus and grapes, and 3 XP for peas)

After taking all these factors into consideration, we calculated that you get the most bang for your buck for crops in the following order (best to least profit):

Peas
Asparagus
Grapes
Sugar Cane
Tomatoes

Keep in mind that you may need to pay for plowing your crops, so your profit will go down for crops that grow faster such as grapes and peas, as compared to slower growing crops like asparagus.

Also, some crops cannot be grown until you reach at least Level 19 in FarmVille. Also, days are only twenty three hours long in FarmVille, so your day will not exactly correspond to the FarmVille day. You have to keep this in mind to judge exactly when you need to be online and when you can be able to plow new spaces to set up new plots.

FarmVille Secret Number 2: Identify and Get the Best FarmVille Trees

Trees take a long time between planting and harvest time, so you will not earn much by growing them. However, they have a particular advantage that smaller crops don't have: they do not wither. Also, they do not need plowing, and do not need replanting.

Olive trees, date trees, banana trees and pomegranate trees can be acquired as a gift, while it costs 27 FarmVille cash to plant an Acai tree. The income varies, with 69 coins for date trees versus 158 coins for Acai trees. Also, it only takes 2 days to harvest acai berry versus 5 days for pomegranates.

FarmVille Secret Number 3: Hitting the Ground Running in FarmVille

A lot of players new to FarmVille find it very difficult to get started. They find FarmVille daunting because it takes money, time and a lot of concentration to get started in FarmVille. Using the following trick it should be easier to start so that you can start growing crops fast and move along faster in FarmVille.

The first thing you should ask yourself is how often do you log into the game, and for how long. These are completely different, and both of these aspects will help decide which crops you should grow and what techniques you should use.

When you start playing FarmVille, you are assigned 6 square plots, two that are half grown, and two with eggplants and strawberries. You are also given 200 coins. After you harvest the first crops, you will end up with 323 coins.

This trick will help you swap coins for XP so you'll not have any leftover land, and will also help those who are at a high level but don't have enough plots to work with.

Start with 10 or 11 plots of land that are either plowed or fallow. Whatever you do, make sure you start with this amount of land.
Calculate how much money you will need to plant whatever you want to harvest (see secrets one and two).
Plow all your 10 or 11 plots - You will need exactly 150 coins to plow the land.
Buy SOYBEANS to plant and plant them in all the 10 plots. You will need another 150 coins to plant the soybeans.
By just planting and plowing, you just earned 30 points.
After planting the soybeans, delete the plots with your delete tool.
Now you will be able to start all over again.
Repeat this all over again multiple times.
This allows you to get nearly unlimited XP for the cost of only 10 coins per XP while not doing anything on your farm.
After repeating this multiple times, plant something of actual value (see secrets one and two above), and shut down your computer
The next day, you can harvest this crop to get more coins and enough to continue using this XP trick.

To progress levels you will need to earn experience points or FarmVille XP as its called in the game. XP can be earned by completing almost any task on your farm, so progressing to the next level is quite easy within the first few levels. As you progress levels the amount of FarmVille XP needed to level up increases and more tasks need to be completed to progress. As you learn how to play FarmVille the easier it will become to get XP and you'll find out which tasks will earn you the most.

Whilst learning how to play FarmVille you'll find different levels unlock new items for you to use e.g level seven enables you to buy rice while level nine will enable you to buy a wagon and a bike, and so on. It sure gets you hooked! With the aim to have a fully working hive with bees and a queen bee obtained by growing flowers. After you've completed your hive you'll earn more money from your crops and be able to collect honey.

Share items with your neighbors and in turn they'll share items with you. Need an item quickly send it out to your neighbors and if they return the favor they'll send it back to you for your inventory.

As you progress, items in your inventory will mount up (a max of 200 items). Sell whatever you don't need to earn more FarmVille coins, you'll also get extra space to receive more items.

How To Play FarmVille - Forget About The Bells And Whistles

Concentrate on getting levels behind you for the moment and build up your FV coins and FV XP. When you've gained enough, you can then concentrate on the bells and whistles as I like to call it. I am of course, talking about the decorations and aesthetics of your farm. If you buy none essential items to early you'll fall at the first hurdle. If you do this you'll end up doing one of two things, either get bored and give up FarmVille all together or panic and by FV cash and FV XP with real money. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Farmville ribbons are awarded to players who manage to carry out a specific task on Farmville. To earn this ribbon you have to be sent and accept gifts from your neighbours, when receiving gifts you have to remember that you can only have 21 unique gifts in your received box at a time. If you do have duplicate gifts in your box you will have to remove them.

You can use or sell any duplicate gifts that you have received. This ribbon is earned by all the gifts remaining in your received box. So you need to have 21 different gifts rather than having a total of 21 gifts that's made up of having duplicates of the same gift.

What is FarmVille About?

By now I am sure that you have heard of FarmVille on Facebook. Since its launch in June 2009, FarmVille has become the most popular game application on Facebook in less than 6 months! As of December 31, 2009 FarmVille boasts of over 73.8 Million monthly active users! Quite impressive.

A long time ago I gave up social networking over the computer as I believed it was a waste of time. Then there is my friend Lionel, I went to his house to upgrade his computer and what was the first thing he did to test out the upgrade, he went and signed onto Facebook to play FarmVille!

I didn't get it. What is it about FarmVille that has all these people fascinated? So I started investigating. I discovered that FarmVille is a real-time farm simulation game that is the newest in a long line of mega-popular casual games on Facebook from Zynga. The game allows members to manage a virtual farm by planting, growing and harvesting virtual crops, trees, and livestock.

More importantly, I learned that the game is built around Social Networking. FarmVille is a social game in which players post their achievement to their Facebook profiles, compete against friends, and use their neighbors as tools to grow bigger. In fact, it is the Social Networking aspect that allows one to advance in the game.

But to truly understand it I had to play it. When I started playing FarmVille, the theme song of the 60′s sitcom T.V. show Green Acres starts to play in my mind:

FarmVille is the place to be... Farm livin′ is the life for me... Land Spreadin' out so far and wide... Keep Manhattan, just give me that country side...

I felt like Oliver Wendell Douglas working hard on the farm and not getting much accomplished. I could just imagine me riding on an old tractor, planting crops that had trouble growing, and Eb, my hired hand, is busy talking to Arnold (the pig) and Eleanor (the Milk Cow)! Then Mr. Haney would show up and try to sell me useless equipment and supplies! That's about what it felt like when I first started to play FarmVille. I needed to know how to succeed at FarmVille.

Zynga launches prepaid debit card with American Express

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc., the social games publisher, has reached a partnership agreement with American Express (AXP.N) to issue a prepaid debit card that could be used to redeem virtual credits, the two companies said.

The partnership will help increase use of American Express' digital payments platform Serve as the credit card issuer competes with online gateway Paypal, a unit of eBay Inc (EBAY.O), which is pushing to process transactions by mobile phones.

Zynga, whose shares have fallen as user numbers for its most popular games decline, aims to boost the profile of its partnership programs with major companies and also to retain users, who will be rewarded with in-game credits for swiping the American Express card.

"This is the first rewards program for a pre-paid card, and Zynga and American Express have the opportunity to bring value to Zynga players, while connecting and expanding American Express' customer base," Jeff Karp, Zynga's chief marketing and revenue officer, told Reuters.

The two companies declined to disclose financial details of the partnership.

Beginning this week, cardholders who make purchases exceeding $25 will collect "Farm Cash," the currency used to purchase virtual goods within Zynga's FarmVille game.

Zynga said it will roll out similar rewards for its CastleVille and CityVille in the coming months.

"This enables us for the first time, in a fully integrated fashion, to link everyday spend that you would do online or offline to in-game virtual currency rewards and special offers," said Daniel Schulman, group president of enterprise growth at American Express.

In the future, Schulman said, the program will be expanded so Zynga players can receive real-life discounts for in-game activity.

Zynga shares have shed almost half its value since April 1 amid investor doubts over whether the company can sustain its revenue growth.

The company's stock has been battered especially in recent days, as Facebook's poorly received initial public offering has tainted some Internet stocks.

Zynga shares closed down 1 percent on Monday at $7.09.
